Who We Are
When faced with a health crisis, children not only need good medical attention, they also need their families close by. Ronald McDonald House Charities® Atlantic has helped to make that happen for more than 30 years. We are a home for eighteen families each night; a place where they can step away from the hospital, yet are close enough to be available at a moment’s notice; a place where children and teenagers being treated as outpatients can stay with their parents and siblings; a place where parents can meet and talk with other families who are experiencing some of the same fears and concerns.
Our House is more than just a place to stay; it’s a place of comfort and support that keeps families together in a compassionate and comfortable environment. It is for entire families to use, allowing them to keep their lives moving forward as normally as possible – despite the challenges they face. We are proud to help families when they need it most.
Ronald McDonald House Charities® Atlantic is one of 15 Houses across Canada and one of 365 around the world. Since our doors opened in May 1982, over 25,000 families have stayed with us when they had to travel to Halifax for medical treatment for their child. Families share in the cost of their stay by contributing a nominal fee of $11 per night for their entire family. However, no family is ever turned away due to an inability to pay.
In January 2007, we opened the first Ronald McDonald Family Room in Canada at the IWK Health Centre, offering families a place to take a break from their daily hospital routine. Creating this ‘home like setting’ in the hospital allows us to provide comfort for local families as well as those from out of town.
In June 2011, we opened a second Family Room in The Moncton Hospital. Our Family Rooms provide an oasis of calm and support inside the walls of the hospital, allowing families to be just steps away from their child receiving medical care.
Ronald McDonald House Charities® Atlantic is a non-profit organization. We depend upon charitable donations and volunteer support from many individuals, corporations and foundations to fulfill our mission. We receive no government funding.
